3- DAY OLDONYO LENGAI TREKKING
Mount Oldonyo Lengai (2,962 m / 9,718 ft), the sacred “Mountain of God,” rises dramatically from northern Tanzania near Lake Natron. Revered by the Maasai, this active volcano offers trekkers a truly unique adventure, combining volcanic landscapes, alkaline crater lakes, and unforgettable sunrise vistas. The hike is moderately challenging, with steep sandy slopes and volcanic scree, making it ideal for fit hikers seeking both cultural immersion and natural wonder. Treks are guided by local Maasai, with overnight camping in scenic locations under the African stars.
Itinerary
Your journey begins with a scenic drive from Arusha or Karatu, winding through the Great Rift Valley plains dotted with Maasai villages and grazing livestock. Upon arrival at Lake Natron, the crimson-tinged alkaline waters shimmer in the sunlight, and flocks of flamingos paint the shoreline pink.
After meeting your Maasai guides and porters, embark on a gentle afternoon hike toward the base of Oldonyo Lengai. The trail offers dramatic views of the volcano’s dark slopes and surrounding plains, with time to interact with Maasai locals, learning about their traditions and connection to the mountain. As evening falls, set up camp at the base and enjoy your first night under a vast, star-filled African sky.
